Lumen by Jenny Sabin Studio

Lumen, winner of The Museum of Modern Art and MoMA PS1’s annual Young Architects Program, 2017, used Dazian specialty sewing to complete the project. Wade Wesson, Director of Design at Dazian has been working with the Jenny Sabin Studio since 2007. When Jenny asked us to work with her on her recent endeavor, Lumen, Wade became the product engineer for Jenny’s design. Each piece in this project, 1,100 in the large canopy and 600 in the smaller canopy, had individual locations & measurements.

While we did not install the canopies, the entire piece had to be patterned and labeled for precision sewing and the placement of each piece. The pieces were coded and labeled by color, size and location on a grid. The process of joining the knits by sewing was part of our challenge as well as how to stabilize such a large piece to create the necessary tension to prevent the canopies from sagging. All of the pieces were UV reactive and changed color due to the intensity and location of the sun on the 2 canopies. The special yarn used absorbs sunlight by day and illuminates at night, hence its name, Lumen.
